The dark side of perfectionism
What if I was to tell you that perfectionism is actually holding your performance back? What most people don’t know about perfectionism is that it’s a fear-based response. Imagine playing the game of soccer so focused on not losing, that you miss all the fun; and the opportunity to examine the field to see opportunities for better future games.
Being a Perfectionist is one of the 5 imposter coping strategies. ie it’s triggering you to protect yourself from falling or from feeling like other people are judging you for not being good enough.
Over time, perfectionism tends to reinforce itself as a great way of doing things because you deliver to a high standard. It isn’t helped because people recognize that the quality of what you create is great and that ceaseless drive you have to never be anything less than perfect creates positive results most of the time.
Being a perfectionist also burns a lot of energy though. All those sleepless nights, those long hours, and the time you spend trying to be perfect, potentially could be horsepower you put into something else. Or horsepower you shift to helping those around you to magnify your impact. Equally, the impact of being a perfectionist on your team can be considerable. Perfectionism can be termed the enemy of collaboration, and it drains not only your own energy but also that of the teams you work with. What if you could shift that energetic bias?
Acting in this way undermines the results you are truly capable of — you can actually achieve a lot more! The secret is shifting energy from being a perfectionist to being an optimalist.
Here are some really interesting comparisons between perfectionists and optimalists, many of which we will visit over the coming weeks.
So, if you’re interested in understanding how to deal with perfectionism, we are planning a really exciting 60-minute Beat Perfectionism mini-masterclass as part of a much larger offering later in the year.
